Spanning dark waters, these gritty depictions of bridges deal with personal feelings about the passage of time and with the sense that the world is a dangerous place. The image of the carefully composed and structured bridge is juxtaposed against the chaos of the natural world symbolizing hope and the ability to overcome troubling times and situations.
Studies are first made with graphite on handmade paper. Painting with oil paint on canvas, tar is then applied and allowed to drip onto the bridges — suggesting damage and the struggle to survive. These paintings result from a long, slow process as tar, like the ravages of time, can be unpredictable.
Influenced by the dark autumn nights in Connecticut, a palette of rusty reds and dark inky blues are mixed with the brown of the tar to create a sensual and mysterious landscape. |
